Welcome to Lent. Forty days of fasting, prayer and almsgiving that can be accomplished together in a way that is not possible outside of Lent. The phrase “Festina Lente” in Latin, properly translated “make haste slowly” is a clue to the meaning of the number forty, related to the “L” that we see in roman numerals, almost fifty. Our journey is toward Christ, with Christ and from Christ. The Gospel of Luke begins with a view of the struggle with the devil that has been accomplished even before we meet Christ. His spirit is tied up in all our struggles. We shall not be overwhelmed. He is victorious. Festina Lente
